Odd Birch

Slow notes from a small woodworking bench.

Why birch warps

Birch moves more than you expect when the seasons change. Let boards rest indoors for a couple of weeks before cutting, and always sticker them so air reaches every face.

A plain oil finish

Three thin coats of oil, a day apart, rubbed out with a cotton rag. Nothing fancy, and it repairs easily when the table gets a scratch.

Sharpening without fuss

One medium stone, one fine stone, and a strop. Most of the work is keeping the angle steady, not buying more stones.
